What is ketamine?

Ketamine is an FDA-approved anesthetic medication that has been used safely in medical settings for decades. In recent years, research has shown its potential benefits in treating various mental health conditions and chronic pain.

How does ketamine work ?

Ketamine rapidly balances brain chemicals, specifically targeting certain receptors to alleviate symptoms of mental health disorders. The therapy’s effects can often be felt quickly and may provide relief when traditional treatments have been ineffective. It works by affecting certain receptors in the brain, particularly the NMDA receptors. It promotes the release of neurotransmitters like glutamate, which plays a vital role in neural plasticity. This can lead to improved neural connections and the formation of new pathways, which may positively impact mood and mental health.

What does ketamine treatment at Austin Ketamine Clinic feel like?

During the treatment session, you may experience a sense of dissociation from your surroundings, relaxation, and altered perceptions. Some individuals describe it as a dream-like or out-of-body experience. The effects may vary from person to person, but our experienced medical team will closely monitor you throughout the process to ensure your safety and comfort. We offer a very relaxing, comfortable environment, carefully chosen for its calming and peaceful setting near Barton Creek Greenbelt, where you can feel safe and cared for.

How long does a typical ketamine infusion therapy session last?

The duration of a ketamine infusion is 45 minutes. A session also includes a pre-infusion visit with the provider, IV and vital-signs set-up, and post-infusion recovery; total time in the clinic is usually about 1.5 hours.

What conditions can ketamine treatment help with?

Ketamine has shown promise in treating various mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), suicidal thoughts, bipolar disorder, Tourette syndrome, and addiction to alcohol and drugs.

Can ketamine treatment help with addiction?

Ketamine treatment has shown great potential in helping individuals struggling with addiction. Studies suggest that ketamine can help disrupt maladaptive reward patterns and decrease the reinforcing effects of addictive substances. Many of our patients have used ketamine infusions to aid in reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms, making it easier for them to engage in other therapeutic interventions.

What can I expect after a ketamine treatment session?

Some individuals may experience mild lingering effects after the treatment, such as drowsiness or altered perception. However, these effects typically subside within a few hours. Many patients report an improvement in mood and a sense of mental clarity following the treatment. You may also notice an increase in sensitivity to emotional stimuli. Focus on self-care after each session.

Driving is not allowed for the remainder of the day. You will need a ride home.

Is ketamine treatment covered by insurance?

At this time, we unfortunately do not accept insurance. We can provide you with a superbill that you can attempt to file for reimbursement with your insurance, but as of now we are not subscribed with any insurance providers.

How soon can I expect to see improvements in my condition after undergoing ketamine therapy?

The timing of improvement varies from person to person. Some individuals may experience positive effects shortly after the first treatment, while others may require multiple sessions before noticing significant improvements.

Is ketamine treatment suitable for children or elderly individuals?

Ketamine treatment is generally well-tolerated by adults of various age groups. However, its use in elderly individuals may require additional considerations and evaluation by our medical team to determine suitability. Austin Ketamine Clinic does not treat individuals under the age of 18 years.

Will I need to discontinue any current medications or treatments before starting ketamine therapy?

In the vast majority of cases, no. However, before starting ketamine therapy, it is essential to inform our medical team about any current medications or treatments you are undergoing. They will assess any potential interactions and provide appropriate guidance.

How do I prepare for a ketamine treatment session? Are there any restrictions on eating or drinking before the treatment?
